根据以下内容回答题:

No one knows for sure why birds migrate. One theory of migration says that ancient birds of the northern part of the earth were forced southward during the Ice Age,when ice covered large parts of Europe,Asia and North America. As the ice melted, the birds came back to their homelands, spent the summer, and then went south again in winter.Gradually, these comings and goings became habits, and birds now migrate though much of the ice has gone. Another theory proposes that the ancient home of all modern birds was the tropic areas. There lived so well that the region became overcrowded. Many species had to move northward.During the summer, these birds found plenty of room and food.In winter, however, food be-came scarce and they had to return to the south. A newer theory is that increasing daylight stimulates certain glands(腺)in the bird’s body and prepares it for migration. One scientist is able to make birds migrate in midwinter by expo-sing them for two months to artificial daylight.Recoveries of marked birds indicate that they fly north as soon as they are set free. The conclusion is that the urge to migrate is determined by changes in the bird’s body which take place under seasonal changes in the length of daylight. This theory would account for the fact that not all birds migrate at the same time. Each sDecies seems to have its own schedule. The theory would also account for the regular time and rou‘tes of migration.Birds arrive at a given place year after year.Unfavorable weather delays them only a few days.Total hours of daylight, rather than weather, start them on the way. How birds find their way to the same place year after year and why they follow their own Darticular route are still mysteries. They evidently do not follow known landmarks, for many young birds migrate alone without the help of experienced adults.

We can conclude from the first paragraph that__________ .

A.during the Ice Age,the whole Europe was covered with ice

B.the south used to be the homelands of all birds

C.scientists can confidently explain why birds migrate now

D.migration of birds can be explained by the change of ice on earth

根据以下内容回答题:

One of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today is,of course, the voice of the advertisers. It shouts at us from the television screen and the radio loudspeakers, waves to us from eVery page of the newspaper, signals to us from the roadside bill-boards all day and flashes messages to us in colored lights all night. Advertising has been among England’s biggest growth industries since the war.PerhaDs the reason is that advertising saves the manufacturers from having to think about the customer. At the stage of designing and developing a product, there is quite enough to think about without worrying over whether anybody will want to buy it.The designer is busy enough without adding customer-appeal to all his other problems of man.hours and machine telerances and stress fac-tors.so they just go ahead and make the thing and leave it to the advertiser to find eleven wavs of making it appeal to purchasers after they have finished it,by pretending that it offers status,or attracts、love,or signifies manliness. Other manufacturers find advertising saves them from changing their prodUCt.And manu.facturers hate change. The ideal product is one which goes on unchanged for ever. If,therefore, for one reason or another, some alteration seems calied for—how much better to change the image, the packet or the pitch made by the product, rather than go to all the inconvenience of changing the product itself.

Which of the following can best describe the author‘s attitude toward modem advertising?

A.Interested.

B.Shocked.

C.Disapproving.

根据以下内容回答题:

Let US take a look at the chief thing in the story—the human body itself.A human body appears to be rather soft and delicate, compared with that of a wild animal, but it is actually surprisingly strong.Indeed, its very softness and looseness are an advantage;it makes man good at moving about and falling about in safety.Man is the most skillful in movement of all living things of his own size, because he can do so many different things with his limbs.Man’s games show how he can control his own body.No other land creature can swim as skillfully as man;none has such varied grace;very few live as long as he;none is so strong in its natural resistance to disease. Therefore man has a great advantage in his battle against the risks of damage and death that threaten him.It is difficult to kill him as long as he is fed and in good health.Yet every day thousands of people die needlessly, even though man is naturally strong, because of those two killers, disease and starvation, with the battle.

Old age?No one can live forever,so one might’suppose that quite a large number of oldpeople would come to the end of their days every year. There is,however, another thing to re-member.During the time it has taken you to read this page,a considerable number of babies have been born somewhere in the wodd—one is born every one and a quarter seconds!Of these babies, one group can be expected to have a good long life of about seventy years, because they were lucky enough to be born in countries where living standards are high.

The deadliest of all killers are starvation and disease. We cannot be content until we have mastered them.To do so is one of the most important tasks of our times.

The softness and looseness of man’s body are an advantage because it__________ . 查看材料

根据以下内容回答题,

There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present,we realize that although these are the.areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldWide. On several occasions over the past decade,a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile tmmc.In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air poilu-tion.Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels(coal and oil)is creating a“greenhouse effect”——con-serving heat refleeted from the earth and raising the world’S average temperature. If this view is correct and the worid’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York,Boston,Miami, and New Orleans will be in water. Another view.1ess widely held,is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature——a result that would be equally disas-trous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age,and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top fanning areas.Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen(though one recent government report drafted bv experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is#cry possible).Perhaps,if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now.

As Dointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution__________ .

A.caused widespread damage in the countryside

B.affected the entire eastern half of the United States

C.had a damaging effect on health

D.existed merely in urban and industries areas

根据以下内容回答题:

As contrasts go,there are few other pairs of culture as distinct from each other as the Japa-nese and the Americans.Japan’s many centuries of history and especially its Buddhist heritage have given the Japanese an attitude of repose(从容)——the best course is to let it be:When the time is ripe, things will work out by.themselves.America,on the other hand,is just a few centuries old and displays an almost volcanic liveliness and restlessness. For the Japanese, social harmony has a prior claim in every circumstance;for the Americans, harmony is the result of the rational interaction of free and fair-minded people. One does not lightly move from traditions in Japan, many of which are centuries old;in the United States, the habits and attitudes of even one’S parent’S generation are suspect. Every cuhure, through its legal and institutional arrangements, mirrors the society’S reso-lution of some basic human problems. These can provide a useful framework for the analysis of cuhural differences.Organizations also face the same problems and usually take their cue from the prevailing culture in designing solutions to these problems. This suggests that the perspec-tive provided by viewing cuhure through the framework of this problem will be useful for organi-zational analysis as well. The following sections present a discussion of such a framework in the context of the contrast between Japan and the United States. Before this is presented, however,we must alert the reader that the differences are stated here as being sharper than they may be in reality. On each of the aspects discussed later, there is naturally considerable variation within each culture, because examples demonstrating the cul-tural reality opposite to the one described in this book can be found easily. Thus, the following discussion should be viewed in the way it is presented,as generalizations and tendencies rather than as absolutes.

Cultural differences between the Japanese and the Americans are the__________ .

A.most obvious

B.slightest

C.Same

D.less suitable

根据以下内容回答题:

Conflict, like stress,is a natural phenomenon when people interact.Conflict in some form. is always present;however,it is not always negative.Conflict can be positive, for example, when you and your colleagues try to select the best pos.sible alternative to a problem. However, much more attention is given to the negative aspects of conflict. Conflict occurs when we fear the unknown. This can be very simple:someone says some-thing in a tone of voice different from our expectations, which raises questions in our mind as to what the real meaning might be.Of course conflict can,and does, occur in much more serious circumstances.Your ability to detect and understand conflict will place you in a better position to control the situation.Conflict is often categorized in three stages.Stage one is the day-to-day irritations that require minimal coping strategies.Stage one conflict is real but low in intensity. The inten-sity can increase if irritations increase and no solution iS found. Stage two is reached when the parties become competitive. Each person protects his serf-interest and fears loss of face. The win-lose attitude becomes integrated with the problem.Stage three is reached when the objective changes from wanting to win toward wanting to hurt the other party. This stage can be explosive because other people are drawn into the con-flict and sides are chosen.Problem solving is no longer a realistic method of resolution. By understanding the three stages of conflict,it will be easier for you to handle the day-to-day situations to which you are exposed. You will also be able to detect potential conflict be-tween others in which you do not want to get involved.

Conflict is__________ .

A.paid attention to because it is negative

B.only positive when occurring between colleagues

C.universally present in human interactions

D.similar to stress in every aspect

根据以下内容回答题:

A volcanic eruption in Iceland has sent ash across northern Europe.Airlines have stopped or changed the flights across the Atlantic Ocean, leaving hundreds of passengers stuck in air-ports.

Grimsvoto is oDe of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. What makes Grimsvoto different is that it lies under a huge glacier(冰川)of ice up to 12 meters thick. The hot volcano heats up the ice above it,which then forms a layer of water between the glacier and the volcano. This layer of water puts pressure on the volcano, keeping it stable. As the water flows out from under the glacier, the pressure lifts. The lava(岩浆)from the volcano then comes up to the surface. This is exactly what happened today.

Now.airlines have to make changes to their flights SO as not to fly through the clouds of volcanic as.h.According to.KLM,one of Europe’s biggest airlines, airplanes cannot go under the cloud or over it.Going through the cloud can result in ash getting stuck in the airplane’s engines, causing damage to the plane.

The eruption has also caused problems for animals in Iceland. The volcano left ash and sharp,glass-like rocks all over the countryside.Farmers are keeping their animals inside to stop them from eating ash—covered grass or the sharp objects.

What makes Grimsvoto different from other volcanoes? 查看材料

A.It is below-ice.

B.It lies under the sea.

C.It is the largest volcano.

D.Its lava affects the airlines.
