Some recent researches also 【B13】 that we can remember every thing 【B14】 happens 【B15】 us. We 【B16】 not be able to recall(回忆)the things we've heard and seen, but it is all kept there in the storehouse of the human mind.

Earlier scientists thought the power of one's brain got weaker as one grow 【B17】 . But it is now thought that is not 【B18】 . As long as the brain is 【B19】 【B20】 exercise it keeps its ability. It has been proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain. It is now thought that the more work we give our brains, the more work they are able to do.

Like the body, the memory improves with use. Unlike the body, the memory can improve with
age.

For many years, doctors have been studying the way the brain works. We all know that the brain has two sides, the left and the right. The right side controls the senses (seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling), and is the creative and imaginative side. The left side of the brain controls our logical thinking. It processes the information which comes in, and puts it into order, We call the left side the "educated" side of the brain and generally, in western societies, people have developed this side of the brain more than the fight side.

Scientists believe that our brain will work much more efficiently if both the right side and the left side are developed equally. In many schools today, teachers try to educate the children in such a way that both sides of the brain are used. This can be done with logical subjects including mathematics and science as well as with creative subjects such as art and literature. The result achieved by students who are educated in this way is usually better than the result of students who are educated in a more traditional way. Traditional teaching tends to exercise the left side of the brain without paying very much attention to the development of the right side.

great thinkers such as Bertand Russell the Philosopher, and Albert Einstein, the scientist, only in their work, but also in creative and imaginative activities. It was because of their many different interests in life that they were able to achieve the full development of both sides of their brain.

As long as Einstein and Russell lived, their brains functioned efficiently. It was their bodies, finally, which could not go on any longer.

The body improves ______.

A.with age

B.with use

C.with memory

D.with development

Memory is the ability to keep track of things that have happened in the past. Memory reall
y is learning. One needs memory to ride a bicycle. A dog needs to remember if it is to come when called.

Memory is said to be stored in the brain as a "memory trace (记忆痕) ". What makes up this trace is not known. Some scientists believe that certain chemical substances may carry certain memories. For example, one substance, when given to rats, causes them to fear the dark.

Other research into memory has to do with how the brain works. Psychologists use three means to find out bow a person remembers. For example, give a person a grocery list. Let the person memorize the list, then put it away. The most natural way to find out how much a person remembers of the grocery list is to ask what he or she remembers. This is called the method of recall. Another method is called recognition. Give the person another grocery list. Ask him or her to choose items on the first list from the items that are on only the second list. Often a person will be able to recognize things that he or she cannot recall. A third method of finding how much a person remembers is called relearning. Here the person is asked to read over the first list. The person will probably learn the list the second time faster than he did the first time. The difference in the time it takes to relearn the list is thought of as measure of how much a person has remembered.

One way of remembering something is to repeat it many times. Interest is very important. Boring lists of facts are much more difficult to remember than something that we understand and are interested in. Motivation, or wanting to do something, is also important. Motivation is linked with reward. For example, a hungry animal quickly learns how to do something if that action gets the animal food. In humans, wanting to learn is often motivation. The praise of a teacher or the knowledge that an answer is correct is rewarding.

We can learn from the 2nd paragraph that ______.

A.bad memories may cause rats to fear the dark

B.it is hard to tell what a memory trace consists of

C.chemical substances carry certain memories

D.memory is stored in the brain as a substance

Passage Five

Memory is the ability to keep track of things that have happened in the past. Memory really is leaning. One needs memory to ride a bicycle. A dog needs to remember if it is to come when called.

What Is Death?

People in the past did not question the difference between life and death. They could see that a person died when his heart stopped beating. People have learned, however, that the body does not die immediately when the heart stops beating. They discovered that we remain alive as long as our brain remains active. Today the difference between life and death is not as easy to see as in the past. Modern medical devices can keep the heart beating and the lungs breathing long after the brain stops. But is this life?

This question has caused much debate among citizens in the United States. Many of them want a law that says a person is dead when the brain dies. A person should be considered dead when brain waves stop even if machines can keep the body alive. Such a law would permit doctors to speed removal (切除) of undiseased (没病的) organs for transplant (移植) operations.

The brain is made of thousands of millions of nerve cells. These cells send and receive millions of chemical and electrical messages every day. In this way the brain controls the other body activities. Nerve-cell experts say it is usually easy to tell when the brain has died. They put small electrodes (电极) on a person's skull (头骨) to measure the electrical signals that pass in and out of the brain. These brain waves are recorded on a television screen or on paper. The waves move up and down every time the brain receives messages from the nerve cells. The brain is dead when the waves stop moving.

Although there are people who oppose the idea of a law on brain block for various reasons, the idea of brain wave activity as a test of death is slowly being accepted.

第 31 题 People in the past held that the difference between life and death

A.did not exist.

B.was easy to tell.

C.lay in the brain.

D.was open to debate.
