The history of English is conventionally, if perhaps too neatly, divided into three pe

Once they are more than a month old, babies seem to learn readily. Moreover, solving a pro
blem or discovering the relationship between their own actions and an event in the external world seems to have its own rewards for infants.

The pleasure involved in such an experience seemed obvious in one study of two-to-four- month-old infants who were given a chance to control a yellow-and-green mobile. One of these mobiles was suspended above each infant, who play in a crib (小床) with a ribbon attached to one ankle. EU leadership on climate change will not come cheap. The direct costs alone may be 60 billion ($ 87 billion) , or about 0.5% of total EU GDP, by 2020, said the commissions president, Jose Manuel Barroso. But this is still presented as a bargain compared with the cost of inaction , which Mr. Barroso put at ten times as high. "Oh, leading the world in the fight against climate change need not cost jobs. Even in the most heavily polluting branches of heavy industry. We want to keep out industry in Europe," insisted Mr. Barroso. The trick to achieve the seemingly impossible targets is the EU s emissions-trading scheme (ETS). Recently, a study has confirmed what I’ve long known in my heart: two breakfasts are bette
rthan none. The research on the effect of breakfast on weight gain was done on school children. But for adults, in theory, two breakfasts are also better than none.
