Sports and games make our bodies strong, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep us
healthy.But these are not their only use.They give us valuable practice in making eyes, brain and muscles work together.In tennis, our eyes see the ball coming, judge its speed and direction and pass this information on to the brain.The brain then has to decide what to do, and to send its orders to the muscles of the arms, legs, and so on, so that the ball is met and hit back where it ought to go.All this must happen with very great speed, and only those who have had a lot of practice at tennis can carry out this complicated chain of events successfully.For those who work with their brains most of the day.The practice of such skills is especially useful.

Sports and games are also very useful for character-training.In their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues (品德) as unselfishness, courage, discipline (遵纪守法) and love of one's country; but what is learned in books cannot have the same deep effects on a child's character as what is learned by experience.The ordinary day-school cannot give much practical training in living, because most of the pupils'time is spent in classes, studying lessons.So it is what the pupils do in their spare time that really prepares them to take their place in society as citizens when they grow up.If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will later find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.

36.When we play tennis we have to ()

A.use, first, our eyes, then the brain and finally the muscles

B.make our eyes, brain and muscles work almost at the same time

C.use mainly the arms and legs to hit the ball

D.use mainly the muscles so that the ball is met and hit back

37.The “complicated chain of events”refers to ()

A.the passing of information and making of decisions

B.the meeting and hitting back of the ball

C.the coordinated (协调的) movements of eyes, brain and muscles

D.a lot of practice before playing tennis

38.By character-training, the author means that sports and games can help children ()

A.live a better life when they grow up

B.know better how to behave properly in their future life

C.understand better the virtues they learn in books

D.All of the above

39.According to the author, a child's character can be most deeply influenced by ().

A.what he does out of class

B.what he learns in books

C.his place in society

D.his lessons at school

40.What kind of virtue can playing football build in a player? ()

A.Selfishness.

B.Tearn spmt.

C.Love for himself.

D.Friendliness.

ROBERT BURNS

O, my love is like a red, red rose,

That is newly sprung in June.

So deep in love am I,

And I will love you still, my Dear,

Till all the seas go dry.

Till all the seas go dry, my Dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun!

阅读理解:阅读下面的短文,根据文章内容进行判断,正确写“T”错误写“F”。

Meetings are very common nowadays. They can be weekly, monthly or annually. Some people think most meetings feel like a waste of time. They seem pointless and boring at times.

Then how do you run an effective meeting?

First, assign roles, such as greeter, timekeeper and note taker, so that you, the organizer, can be free to lead discussions and presentations.

Next, take charge from the start. Everyone will listen to you and join your discussion if you take charge in every aspect of the meeting. Show everyone that you really know what you are talking about, and everything that you talk about is useful.

Most important of all, follow the agenda. At the end of the meeting, spend a little extra time for the participants to discuss anything that needs to be immediately discussed but which may not have been on the agenda.

Always ask the participants questions to speak their minds and keep them interested. Remember that a good meeting is a two-way communication. Be open to everyone's opinion, ideas, and suggestions. Don't forget to thank them for the ideas they present.

And finally, close the meeting with everyone knowing what is expected of them and what they should do for the following weeks.Then, send out meeting minutes within a few days, while everyone still remembers the points.

1. A successful meeting should have different people to play different roles. {T、F}

2. Generally people only discuss the items listed on the agenda in a successful meeting.{T、F}

3. An unsuccessful meeting might be full of single-way communication. {T、F}

4. When the meeting is closed, it means there is nothing to do in the following weeks. {T、F}

5. Minutes should be sent out to the participants within a month after the end of the meeting. {T、F}

Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been a few
players who were truly great. How did these players get that way--was it through training and practice, or are great players" born, not made" ? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past--players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup--three from South America and three from western Europe. There has never been a great national team--or a really great player--from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four.

Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood--a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a "ball" made of rags. And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall in the slums of Belfast.

All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.

According to the author, which of the following statements is true?

A.Soccer is popular all over the world, but truly great players are rare.

B.Millions of people all over the world are playing soccer, but only six countries have ever hadfamous stars.

C.Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but only six countries from SouthAmerica and western Europe have ever had great national teams.

D.All over the world soccer is one of the most popular games, but it seems least popular in North America or Asia.

PASSAGE 1 (教材课文原文)

With a teeny waist, exaggerated breasts, icy-blue eyes, 21-year-old Valeria says she is the real natural deal. A real-life Barbie, that is.

That’s what she claims anyway, but many people doubt to her claims. Whether she underwent plastic surgery or uses Photoshop remains unclear. On her blog, the model notes that she is the most famous woman on the Russian Internet because of her doll-like appeal. Hundreds of photos on her Facebook page show a wide-eyed, nearly fake-looking Valeria posing in a variety of outfits.

The model did not return requests for comment. If Photoshop is not a factor in getting Valeria’s look, she likely underwent a barrage of plastic surgery. The president of American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)said, plastic surgery should never be used to transform. oneself into a favorite celebrity or, in this case, a play toy. He also warns patients to keep in mind that plastic surgery is real surgery with real risks, just as with any operation, so the decision should not be taken lightly.

1. Valeria thinks that she is a real-life Barbie.{T; F}

2. Valeria used to accept plastic surgery.{T; F}

3. Valeria writes that she is the most famous woman on the Russian Internet because she posts a lot of pictures on her blog..{T; F}

4. The author thinks Valeria neither Photoshops her, nor accepts a series of plastic surgery.{T; F}

5. The president of ASPS thinks that plastic surgery is of risks.{T; F}

When the world was a simpler place, the rich were fat, the poor were thin, and right-think
ing people worried about how to feed the hungry. Now, in much of the world, the rich are thin, the poor are fat, and right-thinking people are worrying about obesity.

Evolution is mostly to blame. It has designed mankind to cope with deprivation, not plenty. People are perfectly tuned to store energy in good years to see them through lean ones. But when bad times never come, they are stuck with that energy, stored around their expanding bellies.

Thanks to rising agricultural productivity, lean years are rarer all over the globe. Modernday Malthusians, who used to draw graphs proving that the world was shortly going to run out of food, have gone rather quiet lately. According to the UN, the number of people short of food fell from 920m in 1980 to 799m 20 years later, even though the world's population increased by 1.6 billion over the period. This is mostly a cause for celebration. Mankind has won what was, for most of his time on this planet, his biggest battle: to ensure that he and his offspring had enough to eat. But every silver lining has a cloud, and the consequence of prosperity is a new plague that brings with it a

host of interesting policy dilemmas.

As a scourge of the modern world, obesity has an image problem. It is easier to associate with Father Christmas than with the four horses of the apocalypse. But it has a good claim to lumber along beside them, for it is the world's biggest public-health issue today—the main cause of heart disease, which kills more people these days than AIDS, malaria, war; the principal risk factor in diabetes; heavily implicated in cancer and other diseases. Since the World Health Organisation labelled obesity an "epidemic" in 2000, reports on its fearful consequences have come thick and fast.

Will public-health warnings, combined with media pressure, persuade people to get thinner, just as they finally put them off tobacco? Possibly. In the rich world, sales of healthier foods are booming (see survey) and new figures suggest that over the past year Americans got very slightly thinner for the first time in recorded history. But even if Americans are losing a few ounces, it will be many years before the country solves the health problems caused by half a century's dining to excess. And, everywhere else in the world, people are still piling on the pounds. That's why there is now a consensus among doctors that governments should do something to stop them.

The author write this passage mainly to ______.

A.bring up some warnings.

B.tell the reader some new facts.

C.discuss a solution to a problem.

D.persuade the reader to keep fit.
