It is estimated that some seven hundred million people about half the world's population a
re un able to read and write, and there are probably two hundred and fifty million more whose level of attainment(造诣、成就)is so slight that it barely qualifies a literacy(识字).

Recently the attack on illiteracy has been stepped up. A world plan has been drawn up by a committee of UNESCO experts in Paris, as part of the United Nations Development Decade, and an international conference on the subject has also been held. UNESCO stresses that functional literacy is the aim. People must learn the basic skills of responsible citizenship: the ability to read notices, newspapers, timetables, letters, price lists, to keep simple records and accounts, to sort out the significance of the information gathered, and to fill in forms.

The major areas of illiteracy are in Asia, and Central and South America. In Africa there are at least one hundred million illiterates, making up eighty to eighty-five per cent of the total population. In Europe the figure is about twenty-four million, most of them is Southern Europe, with Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Yugoslavia heading the list (the United Kingdom has about seven hundred thousand).

According to the estimate, the illiterate population in the world is ______.

A.two hundred and fifty million

B.one hundred million

C.about half of the total population in the world

D.seven thousand million

But your own books belong to you;you treat them with that affectionate intimacy that annih
ilates(歼灭;消灭)formality. Books are for use,not for show;you should own no book that you are afraid to mark up,or afraid to place on the table, wide open and face down. A good reason for marking favorite passages in books is that this practice enables you to remember more easily the significant sayings,to refer to them quickly, and then in later years,it is like visiting a forest where you once blazed(在树上做标记)a trail. You have the pleasure of going over the old ground, and recalling both the intellectual scenery and your own earlier self.

Advertisement can be thought of as "the means of making known in order to buy or sell good
s or services". Advertisement aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform. and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for lo cal market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement.

There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement.

We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertisement. However, if large scale advertisement leads to in creased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.

It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them.

Advertisement is often used to ______ .

A.deceive customers

B.increase production

C.arouse suspicion

D.push the sale

The Ordinance of 1784 is most significant historically because it embodied the principle t
hat new states should be formed from the western region and admitted to the Union on an equal basis with the original commonwealths. This principle, which underlay the whole later development of the continental United States, was generally accepted by this time and cannot be properly credited to any single man. Thomas Jefferson had presented precisely this idea to his own state of Virginia before the Declaration of Independence, however, and if he did not originate it he was certainly one of those who held it first. It had been basic in his own thinking about the future of the Republic throughout the struggle for independence. He had no desire to break from the British Empire simply to establish an American one--in which the newer region should be subsidiary and tributary to the old. What he dreamed of was an expanding union of self-governing commonwealths, joined as a group of peers.

Which of the following proposals did the Ordinance of 1784 incorporate?

A.New states should be admitted to the Union in numbers equal to the older states.

B.The Union should make the western region into tributary states.

C.New states should share the same rights in the Union as the original states.

D.The great western region should be divided into twelve states.

American Blacks experienced a revolution after 1945, a revolution in expectations. Followi
ng World War Ⅱ, the steady movement toward first-class citizenship for Black people quickened, with significant actions taking place in courts of law, in voting booths, in restaurants and in the streets of the nation.

A decade of intense civil rights activity was launched in 1954 when the United States Supreme Court declared segregated schools to be unconstitutional. In 1955, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , effectively organized the Blacks of Atlanta, Georgia, in a bus boycott. The boycott lasted two years, and when it was over, Blacks no longer were degraded by being forced to sit or stand in the rear of buses.

In 1960, a group of Black college students decided that they, sis well as white persons, had the right to eat at a lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. This sit-in sparked an aggressive national movement and, in the next few years, thousands of young men and women -- Black and white, North and South -- overturned local laws and customs that had maintained segregation. Sit-ins, prayins, freedom rides, freedom marches and demonstrations to open all schools to Black children took place across the nation.

Several important actions took place to change the status of black people ______.

A.after World War Ⅱ

B.in 1954

C.before 1945

D.in 1960
