Water is one of the most important natural resources in the world.

Everywhere, water use is【61】. Humans already use fifty-four percent of all the【62】 water in rivers, lakes and underground. There are some estimates that this【63】will reach seventy percent by 2005.

Fresh water is necessary for life on Earth. People need water for【64】activities and to produce food. Water also is important for energy production and health of Earth's environmental systems.

The United Nations is organizing a【65】of events to increase concern【66】water issues. UN officials have【67】2003 the International Year of Fresh Water. A goal of the【68】is to build support for policies to use water more【69】.

Another goal is to get more people to use water in a way【70】will not hurt environment. The world population is more than six-thousand-million people. More than one-thousand-million【71】safe drinking water. More than two-thousand-million【72】 from diseases【73】to dirty water. And, more than two-thousand-million live without waste-treatment systems.

Water was one of the issues discussed at the UN Millennium Summit two years ago. Leaders said they would work to【74】the number of people without safe drinking water in half by 2015.

Nitin Desai directs the UN Office for Economic and Social Affairs. He says success【75】 these goals will require major changes in the ways people use water.

Next month, the World Water Forum will meet in Kyoto, Japan. Officials plan to【76】the first UN report【77】world water development. This report will examine the world's water problems.【78】it will offer suggestions on ways to meet future water demands. Experts say international reaction【79】the UN report will be an important test of the political desire to solve the water【80】.

Human beings need to drink for their survival. Water ranks【61】on the list of all-time safe

A recent study of 900 water fountains in Los Angeles【64】that half of the fountains【65】contained higher amounts of lead than the【66】the experts consider【67】. In other cities【68】results of tests were announced; too much lead in many, though【69】, drinking fountains. Water doesn't normally contain any lead, but when it passes through pipes, it can【70】. People who drink the water【71】the lead. An adult' s body passes most of the lead【72】the body, but children' s【73】retains more than half the lead【74】. This makes children more likely to be affected. Lead can damage the kidneys, cause【75】and impair learning and memory.【76】four million children in U. S. A. already have high levels of lead in their bodies. Most of this lead comes from【77】polluted with the metal. They can【78】it up from eating dirt or paint chips containing lead. In【79】to limit the lead in water fountains, officials recently suggested that fountains【80】to have too much lead be replaced or repaired. And that certainly requires a lot of money.

第7题

Considered as a continuous body of fluid, the atmosphere is another kind of ocean. Yet, in
view of the total amount of rain and snow on land areas in the course of a year, one of the most amazing water facts is the very small amount of water in the atmosphere at any given time. The volume of the lower seven miles of the atmosphere--the realm of weather events- is roughly four times the volume of the world's oceans. But the atmosphere contains very little water. It is chiefly in the form. of invisible vapor, some of which is carried over land by air currents. If all vapor suddenly fell from the air onto the earth's surface, it would form. a layer only about one inch thick. A heavy rainstorm on a given area may use up only a small percentage of the water from the air mass that passes over. How, then, can some land areas receive more than 400 inches of rain per year? How can several inches of rain fall during a single storm in a few minutes or hours? The answer is that rain yielding air masses are in motion, and as the driving air mass moves on, new moist air takes its place.

The basic source of most water vapor is the ocean, evaporation, vapor transport, and precipitation (陈雨) make up the continuous movement of water from ocean to atmosphere to land and back to the sea. Rivers return water the sea. In an underground arc (弧) of the cycle, flowing bodies of water discharge some water directly into rivers and some directly to the sea.

What might have been discussed before this passage?

A.The ocean.

B.The earth.

C.The rainfall.

D.The atmosphere.

The water we drink and use is running short in the world.

We all have to learn how to stop wasting our limited water. One of the steps we should take is to find ways of reusing it. Experiments have already been done in this field.

Today in most large cities, fresh water is used only once, then it runs into waste system. But it is possible to pipe the used water to a purifying factory. There it can be filtered and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again, just as it were fresh from a spring.

But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not have enough. Then we could turn to the oceans. All we’d have to do to make use of the seawater on earth is to get rid of the salt.

This process is called desalinization, and it is already in use in many parts of the world.

The way to stop wasting our limited water is to ().

A.do experiments with water

B.purify the used water and reuse it

C.use fresh water once again

D.make use of seawater

Archimedes was a famous Greek mathematician and scientist. He was born around 287 BC and h
e died in the year 212 BC.

Archimedes is most well-known for one specific idea that he came up with. "Archimede's Principle" states that a solid object which is immersed in a liquid is pushed up by a force which is equal to the weight of the water that the object moves. For example, if you put a piece of wood and a piece of gold the same size in water, only the wood will float. Both the wood and gold move the same amount of water, but the wood weighs less than this water, while the gold weighs more.

It is believed that Archimedes discovered this principle when the king of Syracuse asked him to solve a problem. The king wanted to know if his crown was pure gold or a mixture of gold and silver. The king, of course, did not melt his crown to find out. The idea came to Archimedes as he lowered himself into his bath. He noticed how the water spilled out of the tub. He decided to use the same idea for the crown. He knew that a gold crown immersed in water would weigh more than one made of silver. The experiment was done and the goldsmith was proved guilty of trying to cheat the king.

A good title for the selection is ______.

A.Archimedes

B.Archimedes' Principle

C.A gold and silver crown

D.The king of Syracuse
